Traffic Safety to Think About as Kids Head Back to School at Concho Elementary
Back to school is an exciting time for parents (especially Moms) and kids alike. As we all rush out the door with urgent desire to get to school and work, we all need to take a moment to realize that there is going to be an increase in pedestrian, bicycle, car and bus traffic.
According to AAA of Arizona, there are 3,572 crashes and 171 fatalities in 2007 with many involving children commuting to and from school. So follow these simple rules to help protect yours and your neighbor’s student.
- Obey the Speed Limit - I know this is usually easier said then done for most of us. However, it is very important to remember to drive no faster than 15 miles per hour in or near a school zone. Fines may be double when “Shop when Children in Crosswalk” signs are present.
- School Zones are Non-Passing Zones! – This has always been a big pet peeve of mine. Passing in a 15 mph school zone is against the law. Even if someone is stopped in a school zone, you can’t go around them. Try to wait patiently for them to move.
- Drop children of on school property - I know the school parking lots get very busy this time of year, but take the time to drop you student off at the school and not on a neighborhood street. Students get excited and tend to rush to the school. At times it is difficult for students to remember to look both ways before crossing. Keep it safe, drop them off at the school.
- Scan between parked cars and other objects for children - kids don’t always look both ways when crossing the street. Keep a close eye on students darting into the roadway.
- Walk around you vehicle before moving it – especially during morning and afternoon hours. There are several of us that need and use our big trucks. It’s hard to see the smaller students from your high advantage point at time. Take an extra minute and check around your vehicle before moving.
- Always stop for school buses that are loading or unloading students – It is illegal to pass a school bus with flashing red lights or an engaged red stop arm.
- Teach children that “parked” vehicles might move – let them know that even though they can see the vehicle, the driver might not be able to see them.
- Obey the crossing guard at all school crossings – do not proceed through the crosswalk until children and the crossing guard have cleared the roadway.
- Know the Bicycle Safety Rules & wear safety gear – Make sure your children who bike to school know and follow safe riding practices and that they always wear their fashionable, proper fitting bike helmet.
Let’s have a Happy & Safe 2009/2010 school year! Go Colt!!
